Understanding The Difference Between Burglary And Robbery

It is a common misconception that burglary and robbery are interchangeable terms that essentially mean the same thing. In reality, however, they are very different crimes.

Robbery occurs when force is used to commit property theft. Everything from the use of a gun during the theft (armed robbery) to the use of physical force without a weapon would turn a theft crime into robbery.

Burglary, on the other hand does not necessarily involve a theft. Instead, it involves the unlawful entry of a home, business or other structure with intention of committing a crime. If it can be shown that you were intending to steal something or commit another type of crime while inside the structure, you may still be charged with burglary.

Although there are clear differences between robbery and burglary charges, there is at least one similarity: both are felonies.
